Ending Toxic Culture and Inspiring Inclusivity of College Gyms

This is my year-long interior design capstone project at RIT, where I researched and redesigned the campus fitness center, including workout areas, circulation paths, and locker rooms, with the goal of addressing toxic gym culture and promoting inclusivity. The project was completed in two phases: the first semester focused on in-depth research, case studies, and collecting insights through surveys, interviews, and user observations to better understand how students experience the space. The second semester involved translating those findings into a comprehensive design proposal.

The project explored how intentional design strategies, such as spatial organization, accessibility, lighting, materiality, privacy, and branding, can shape a more positive and inclusive user experience, particularly for underrepresented and marginalized groups. My final design prioritized visibility, welcoming circulation, inclusive layouts, private and gender-neutral spaces, and a stronger sense of school identity. Final deliverables included research documentation, design plans, renderings, and a formal presentation advocating for more inclusive, student-centered wellness environments on college campuses.

To see the full scope of my capstone project, you can view my final manuscript, which documents the entire research and design process. Pages 31–55 specifically showcase the creative development of the project, including conceptual sketches, spatial planning, design iterations, final layouts, and renderings. This section reflects how research insights were translated into a thoughtful, inclusive design solution for the campus fitness center.
